Dear McBride Elementary Families,
I hope this letter finds you well-rested and energized after our winter break! There's something special about the start of a new calendar year at school – it gives us all a chance to refresh, refocus, and build upon the strong foundation we created together last fall.
As we welcome our students back tomorrow, our teachers and staff are excited to help everyone transition smoothly back into our school routines. The first few weeks of January are crucial for reinforcing our learning environment and school community, so I wanted to share some key information to help us all start 2025 strong.
Resetting Our Daily Routines
Our morning drop-off window remains 7:25 -7:45 AM, with morning meetings beginning promptly at 7:45 AM. We've noticed that late arrivals increased toward the end of the calendar year, which can disrupt learning for all students. Please help your child arrive on time, ready to learn. Remember that our breakfast program starts at 7:25 AM – all students are welcome to join!
Reinforcing Learning Habits
Our teachers will spend the next two weeks reviewing and strengthening essential classroom procedures. This includes:
- Organizing materials and planners
- Practicing focused learning time
- Reviewing homework routines
- Rebuilding stamina for independent reading
- Strengthening collaborative work skills
Your support at home makes a huge difference. Please help by:
- Reestablishing consistent bedtime routines
- Creating a quiet homework space
- Checking your child's planner daily
- Reading together for at least 20 minutes
- Limiting screen time on school nights
Winter Weather Reminders
Please ensure your child comes to school dressed for outdoor recess – we go outside in the rain and/or snow. Label all coats, hats, and gloves with your child's name. Our lost and found is already quite full!
Looking Ahead
Mark your calendars for these important January events:
- January 20: Martin Luther King Jr. Day (No School)
- January 23: PTO Meeting 6:00 PM
- January 31: Teacher Work Day - No School for kids
Positive Behavior Focus
This month, we're emphasizing our school-wide value of Determination. We'll be recognizing students who demonstrate these values through our "PRIDE ticket" program. Ask your child about the specific ways they can show these values in class, in the hallways, and at recess.
A Personal Note
I took a good break and was able to recenter myself with my family over the past two weeks. I have one kiddo off to college in the fall and I am trying to squeeze all of those last moments of family time out of her despite her resistance and desire to be an independent adult. She is going to be walking in her cap and gown soon enough and I am so grateful for the foundational skills and love of learning that she developed in elementary school that started her on her path. All of that to say, I am ready to restart the inspiring work at McBride in service of building the future of St Helens High School graduates.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me or your child's teacher.
Here's to a fantastic start to 2025!
Happiest of New Years to you all!
